Frequently Asked Questions

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is a natural method of health care that focuses on treating the causes of physical problems, rather than just treating the symptoms. Chiropractors specialize in the location of abnormal movement or position of spinal bones. Spinal problems such as these cause pressure or irritation of spinal nerves, which causes symptoms such as pain, muscle spasm, stiffness, numbness and tingling, or even weakness. By correcting the underlying cause of the symptoms, a chiropractor works to prevent the problem from returning in the future.

What is an adjustment?

An adjustment is a gentle force applied in a precise direction into the spine intended to restore proper motion and structural alignment, thereby reducing pain and correcting mechanical or structural instability.

Does it hurt to get adjusted?

No. Most chiropractic adjustments are not only painless, they actually feel great and relieving. When you allow the vertebrae in your spine to return to their proper position, you will notice much less stress and tension. Most patients look forward to their treatments as many experience instantaneous relief immediately afterwards.

Are all patients adjusted the same way?

No. The doctor evaluates each patient's unique combination of pains, health history, and state of wellness and develops an individual course of care.

What causes the sound during an adjustment?

During some adjustments, patients describe hearing a "popping" or "clicking" sound in their spine. This sound is completely painless and harmless. It is the result of gas being released naturally from the joint during treatment. It is the same phenomenon as when people "crack" their knuckles (which has been proven NOT to cause arthritis or swollen knuckles).

Is chiropractic care addictive?

No. It is possible to get used to feeling more balanced, less stressed, and more energetic as a result of regular chiropractic care. Chiropractic is not addictive, however, good health is.

Once you see a chiropractor, do you have to go for the rest of your life?

No. The extent to which you choose to benefit from your chiropractic care is ultimately up to you. We help some people with pain relief, others with spinal stabilization and rehabilitation. We also work with people who have become accustom to living pain-free and see them periodically to prevent future problems. Everyone is different, and everyone should have the choice to treat their body as they wish.

What type of education do chiropractic doctors get?

Chiropractors today require a minimum of 7 years of college and must pass 4 national board examinations before applying for a state license. Before entering chiropractic school, most will have an undergraduate degree, and everyone will earn another bachelors degree after just two years in the program. At the end of 4 years of classes and one year treating patients, students graduate with a doctorial degree of chiropractic (D.C.). Additionally, chiropractors must continue with education to maintain their license. For example, Virginia chiropractors need 60 continuing education hours every two years to keep their license.
